The Ngati Awa Community Development Trust was established on 24 April 2005 as part of the reconstitution of Te Runanga o Ngati Awa. The Trust is a Charitable Trust with the trustees appointed by the Runanga. Prior to the reconstitution of the Runanga many of the community development activities of the Runanga were undertaken by a very small Runanga executive team assisted by committees of volunteers. This approach had resulted in good progress in managing Ngati Awa's affairs since its establishment in 1981. However there are now greater expectations on the organisation which require full time management.

Ngati Awa is a iwi (tribe) consisting of a confederation of 22 hapu (sub-tribes) located around Whakatane, Te Teko and Matata in the North Island of Aotearoa / New Zealand. In addition to the traditional hapu there are two urban based hapu, Ngati Awa-ki-Tamaki at Auckland and Ngati Awa-ki-Poneke at Wellington. According to the 1996 Census around 11,000 people registered their affiliation with Ngati Awa. Ngati Awa derives its name from Awanuiarangi, son of the famous Toikairakau, who settled in the Bay of Plenty many generations before the arrival of Pakeha to Aotearoa.
