An entity called Te Runanga o Turanganui a Kiwa was registered in 1986 to be the mandated iwi authority for the tribes of Turanganui a Kiwa. The Runanga was charged with supporting the iwi, hapu and whanau of Turanganui a Kiwa toward "tino rangatiratanga".

Community based support network with a guiding philosophy that benefits Maori women, their children and families of Ngati Kahungunu, Takitimu waka whanau whanui. Utilize and develop our collective specialist skills to research, conserve, preserve, manage and maintain the intellectual taonga of our respective whanau, hapu, toward sustainability for the prosperity of our respective whanau and hapu.
