WHO?
Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti is a separate and distinct traditional iwi on the East Coast of Aotearoa.
Our iwi derived it's traditional mana status and mana rohe through well known and widely documented BATTLES of our tipuna HAUITI.
Centred in Uawa / Tolaga Bay the tribal boundaries of our ancestral rohe lie between, "Tawhiti-a-Pawa ki Toka Taiau i te awa o Turanganui" (see "Wlliams J.A. Politics of the New Zealand Maori, protest and Co-operation 1891 - 1909", 1969, pg. 53).
Geographically, from Tokomaru Bay to Ka-iti in Gisborne.
WHAT?
Today, whanau of Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti have organised around a growing group of supporters that continues to gain wide and knowledgeable recognition from around the motu.
Our organisation is striving to gain recognition of our traditional iwi rights - primarily before 'state mechanisms' - based, on our documented ancestral history, distinct whakapapa and whenua interests.
CURRENTLY?
It is a major focus of our Iwi organisation to call our whanau from around the motu - who affiliate to Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti to voice and add their support to the efforts of whanau at home.
