Maungawhau is a reserve under the management of Auckland City Council. It is a volcanic cone, the highest on the isthmus. It is the former site of a large fortified Maori village (pa) and show many archaeological remains from that former use. It is a viewing place for the residents and for visitors to Auckland. It has over a million visitors a year.
