Maori Education Trust

The Maori Education Trust (Te tari o nga kaitiaki mo nga take Matauranga Maori ) was formed under the Maori Education Foundation Act 1961. Its basic objective was to encourage Maori into tertiary education. The initial scholarships were derived from public raised funds and private bequests which were subsidised by Government. Additional income is derived by the provision of fee-based service contracts. In 1993 the Maori Education Act 1961 was repealed and replaced by the Maori Education Trust Deed and this remains today.
