As a population group, Maori have on average the poorest health status of any ethnic group in New Zealand. This is not acceptable, and the Government and the Ministry of Health have made it a key priority to reduce the health inequalities that affect Maori. If Maori are to live longer, have healthier lives, and fulfil their potential to participate in New Zealand society, then the factors that cause inequalities in health need to be addressed.

The Maori Education Trust (Te tari o nga kaitiaki mo nga take Matauranga Maori ) was formed under the Maori Education Foundation Act 1961. Its basic objective was to encourage Maori into tertiary education. The initial scholarships were derived from public raised funds and private bequests which were subsidised by Government. Additional income is derived by the provision of fee-based service contracts.
In 1993 the Maori Education Act 1961 was repealed and replaced by the Maori Education Trust Deed and this remains today.
