Maatua Whangai O Kirikiriroa
Maatua Whangai is a Maori not-for-profit community-based social service provider. The services Maatua Whangai provide are divided into three units: justice, health and youth. The youth unit aims to provide two core services that target young people who are involved, or at-risk of being involved, in the youth justice system. The first service is an alternative education programme which caters for up to ten at-risk youth who have been previously non-engaged mainstream education. With the emphasis on providing an holistic intervention, the programme is staffed by two teachers, a social worker and a health advocate. The other service is known as Maori Youth Contestable Funding and provides an intensive one-on-one intervention with high-risk youth offenders.
