Ngai Tahu Development Corporation initiated the establishment of He Oranga Pounamu Charitable Trust, a vehicle for organising and integrating health and social services.
He Oranga Pounamu was established in June 2000, under mandate from Te Runanga O Ngai Tahu and following extensive consultation with Maori Providers, Maori communities and Ngai Tahu whanui.
He Oranga Pounamu is a charitable trust, currently led by a Board of nine trustees. Trustees include representatives of Ngai Tahu, Maori Service Providers and representatives of Maata Waka as the organisation was intended to target programmes of benefit to Maori (and others) in the Ngai Tahu rohe (the South Island excluding Nelson/Marlborough). He Oranga Pounamu is managed by Chief Executive, Fiona Pimm and currently employs 12 staff. Fiona has been with the organisation since its inception.
He Oranga Pounamu was initially established with a focus on Maori service provider development. This strategic focus was developed based on the Ngai Tahu view that Maori communities would benefit from access to quality Maori service providers. The initial focus was on the health sector but the organisation's objectives have always included social services, housing, employment and justice.
He Oranga Pounamu has been successful in supporting the development of Maori service provider organisations and Maori living in the Ngai Tahu rohe now have access to a wider range of Maori services. Key whanau development projects have led to establishment of new services in previously under-serviced communities, and greater community participation for Maori service providers.
