Te Kohanga Reo O Ranana was established in October 1997 under the auspices of Ngati Ranana Maori Culture Club. Te Kohanga Reo o Ranana was set up by a very dedicated and committed group of parents who were fighting to give their tamariki (children) what they considered a vital but missing part of their children’s upbringing; their reo (Maori language), their tikanga (customs) – their identity. Being so far away from whanau (family) and home, these parents wanted to be able to give this to their tamariki no matter how small the input was or might be.

The New Zealand China Maori Friendship Charitable Trust (Chin-Mao) started from a relationship that developed between Hiwi Tauroa and the The Chinese Peoples Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries following an invitation by members of the New Zealand China Friendship Society to join one of their special invitation groups to tour China. Hiwi was a member of a group that visited Rewi Alley and both he and Hiwi decided that it would be beneficial to Maori, as one people, for Hiwi to further develop the exchanges between the two peoples. The Chin-Mao name has developed over time and, as a Trust, it's primary objective is to build and maintain an on-going relationship withThe Chinese Peoples Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and with the New Zealand China Friendship Society. Chin-Mao is for the benefit of all Iwi of New Zealand.
