Pounamu is a family business of Ngapo and Pimia Wehi, the most recognised leaders of the Traditional Maori Performing Arts in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Pounamu, commonly referred to as greenstone is one of the most prized of Maori treasures and symbolises quality. Quality is also the hallmark of the services provided by Pounamu.

We provide contemporary Māori costumes (kakahu) from early-childhood up to adult sizes. We combine the traditional Māori Taniko method of weaving with the durability of modern materials.

Our costume range currently consists of: Piupiu (skirt), Pari me piupiu, Panekoti (bodice with skirt), Korowai (cloak), Tipare (headband), Rakau (Māori stick game) and Poi.

All our products are hand-made in Aotearoa (N.Z.)

However - we also make wall decorations of various shapes, sizes and colours, Whariki (large flax mats), Potai (hats) & Piupiu. PLEASE NOTE: All our procuts are hand made here in New Zealand following traditional Maori tikanga. We normally boil all Flax so most products are safe to be sent overseas (including Australia and the USA).

Peter Jean Caley has evolved a very unique technique and his work is entirely freehand. He enjoys the challenge of large scale works and has a style that could only be described as inspirational realism. Developing his delicate use of colour and brush technique he has spent many years concentrating on wild life studies and portraits.
