Ngati Hawea, Ngati Kautere. Matahiwi Marae is one of the oldest established marae of Ngati Hawea in Hawke’s Bay. It was set up originally as a neutral meeting area for the prominent chiefs around the area.
Today the reserve covers an area of 1.6 hectares and is situated near the mouth of the Tukituki river and surrounded by orchards, vines and horticultural enterprises.
Matahiwi is the gateway to the land, which bears the name, Cape Kidnappers. One can hear the stories that are recorded in the carvings about Maui, his family and the values they have left for the generations that follow to maintain and pass on.

When there are issues of importance to all the Tainui tribes (or to the Tainui people as a single entity) their leaders usually demonstrate a preference for bringing those issues to Maketu, to the cradle of the tribe, to be discussed.
There are two reasons for this, one is that Maketu as the mooring place of the canoe belongs to all of Tainui decent, and they in turn belong to Maketu.
Because of this, all Tainui tribal voices can be heard as tangata whenua in Auaukiterangi. and none is disadvantaged as an outsider might be.
Secondly, any course of action decided upon or agreement made at Maketu is sanctioned by the embrace of their common ancestor, Auaukiterangi.

Makaurau Marae is one of many Marae in Mangere that are affiliated with the Tainui area. The people of Makaurau Marae are affiliated to the sub-tribes of Te Waiohua and Te Akitai, and have direct links to Te Ahiwaru, which is a descendant of the Chiefs of the Tainui Region. Although the Makaurau people are affiliated to more than one sub-tribe this is not unusual in Maoridom. The Makaurau marae is home to Te Wai of Hua, descendents of Nga Iwi.
