Since its first transmission in 1987, Waka Huia has - in about 500 hour long episodes - captured for all time, the faces and voices of many kaumatua who are no longer with us. In the process we have created a vital and important audio-visual archive of Iwi and Hapu life and history. Waka Huia attempts to preserve the Maori language in its best form. It asserts a level of linguistic excellence that must be present in a society that is relearning its native tongue. In the course of its long production history, Waka Huia has travelled many thousands of miles to hundreds of marae and special tribal areas. It has recorded thousands of hours of korero with hundreds of our tupuna.

Operated by the New Zealand Maori Polynesian Canoe Sporting Federation, Nga Kaihoe o Aotearoa Incorporated. Our aim is to increase the awareness of Waka Ama in New Zealand and to help keep members and new paddlers informed.

The Wairoa Maori Film Festival was established in 2005 to "undertake an annual MAORI FILM FESTIVAL in Wairoa District that supports: * Development of a global hub for Maori creativity and talent; * Building bridges among ahi kaa and taurahere populations; * Building bridges among creative communities, Maori and Pakeha; * Building of an international indigenous people's network; and * The revitalisation and renaissance of Wairoa and it's communities."

We invite you to take part in a leisurely one hour guided or self governed tour of the Wairakei Terraces Walkway, and enjoy the stories and history of New Zealand, Ngatoroirangi and Ngati Tuwharetoa, conveyed to you through the impressive carved features throughout the walkway. Experience also an evening of Maori Culture. The evening concludes with a traditional ground cooked Meal (Hangi) and a concert of Song, Dance and Haka.
