Te Runanga o Ngati Apa was established in 1989 to represent that interests of the whanau and hapu of Nga Wairiki and Rangitikei who are generally referred to as the iwi of Ngati Apa. In 1991 the Runanga became an incorporated society thus allowing the establishment of bank accounts and the commencement of contractual arrangements with organisations such as the Crown Forestry Rental Trust for the commencement of Ngati Apa claims processes under the Treaty of Waitangi.
