The Maori Directory (TMD) Logo was designed by our son Caleb (aka Tainui_Moko) and represents the wing of Te Hokioi (Haast Eagle), otherwise known as Pouakai. The largest eagle in the world weighing up to 14kgs with a wingspan of 3 metres, claws as large as a tigers talons and native to the South Island of Aotearoa (NZ).
The blue colours of The Maori Directory web design (template by David Evans) represents Ranginui (Sky Father or Great Heavens) and Te Hokioi was known as the only bird that could fly up to the heavens. The Maori Directory is built and carried on the wings of Te Hokioi - TMD's ability to reach unlimited potential.
The 'eye' within the wing is made up with the abbreviation 'TMD' as the iris and represents the sharp vision of Te Hokioi - to see from great heights all that lay before us, being able to spot opportunities far off into the distance and to grasp these firmly as they come forth with strength, courage and determination.
With powerful conviction, fearlessness and alert senses, we all have the potential to soar too great heights and achieve great feats by doing - the belief comes not through thinking but rather in ones actions.
Banner titled "Wairua of the Waka" is made up of 2 primary photos taken by Photographer Vince Heperi with permission also granted by other copyright holders Ngati Ranginui for use of waka photo and Patea Maori Club for use of Kuia image. Paua background also portrays the many mystical colours of the sky heavens with the 2 eyes of Ranginui (Father Sky) looking down over the waka as our guardian, the Kuia represents her karanga to welcome the waka ashore.
Additional interpretation shared by Vince Heperi: Paua eyes also represent Tangaroa son of Sky father Rangi, waka is made from child of Tane Mahuta brother of Tangaroa, kuia moko represents also whakapapa back to Rangi & Papa in maori spirituality then when Christianity became accepted the whakapapa was raised through to a celestial level of God-supreme cosmic energy conciousness.
The maori warriors in the waka become the aggressive, cutting edge feisty representations of global marketing & seekers of enterprise but they become balanced & less aggressive (not meek or placid) in the presence as well as presence of the kuia & her karanga, they are aware a woman's voice is the first vocalising they hear and a kuia karanga & wailing at their inevitable tangi is the last sound presented to them.
Warriors in waka also represent te ira tane the male element- kuia represents te ira wahine the female element balance these and you have the YING & YANG energy the Chinese for centuries know these energies and of course can be seen in the worldwide practice of tai chi
