Overview of Maori Studies
The Maori Studies academic programme examines the Maori people - their language and culture, past and present, and their place in relation to the other cultures of New Zealand, Polynesia and the world.
We offer a dynamic choice of courses, specialising in a complete language programme taught by both native speakers and second language learners, and a diverse range of traditional and contemporary culture courses. Coursework is supplemented by practical experience at the University's marae, Te Herenga Waka.

Te Tapuae o Rehua is a registered company. It was established in 1998 to increase Maori participation in tertiary education and to ensure high quality course content for Maori tertiary students. The company was formed against a background of low achievement and participation rates for Maori in tertiary education, a mixed standard of course content for Maori studying in South Island tertiary institutions and confusion among these institutions about how to meet their Treaty of Waitangi obligations.
