The Huakina Development Trust (HDT) was established in July 1983 as a charitable trust originally to protect the environment within the lower Waikato River and Manukau Harbour regions known as Te Puaha Ki Manuka and to meet the cultural, economic, social and educational needs of its people.
The HDT is a marae based organisation that is dependent on the support from local marae and accountable to them for its performance. The HDT was later mandated by the Tainui M?ori Trust Board to manage all of Tainui’s environmental issues whose role grew from there.

He Iwi Kotahi Tatou Trust was started in the early 1980s. Initially in response to the growing unemployment problems that had built up to the riot in 1979. Youth issues were a focus in the early years, which led us into developing training programs. In 1995 we decided to change direction as we felt that the training focus had taken over the Trust and we were having increasing difficulty reaching the employment outcomes required of a Tops Funded Training Provider.
